Wayne Dyer nailed it on the head when he said “It’s never crowded along the extra mile.” To be on the league of your own, you need to embrace the extra mile mindset and make it a core part of the way you do things and operate. I often tell my audiences that if they want to see great results they need to ask themselves how much extra effort they are willing to make to make it happen. Like Michael Jordan was always the first one on the floor and the last one to leave, we need to be willing to go the required extra mile in our field.
If you deal with customers on an ongoing basis consider taking some time preparing for each meeting you have with them. Learn their name and even how to pronounce it properly before you meet them. Take the time to research some of their previous work or current involvement to show them you are interested in them as much as you are interested in their business. You will be amazed at how much a little personal touch does to create a successful transaction.
When organizations invite me to speak at their staff conferences, they are often amazed to see me going through the crowd before my talk and meeting people as they come in. During this time, I ask people who they are and do my best to remember their names. I also ask them what they do and what projects they are working on. This simple exercise alone increases my connection with my audiences that results in standing ovations.
As I deliver my speech after having worked the room, I am no longer talking to strangers but friends and I bring them in to my examples. Imagine the surprise as Sue from HR on row F hears me reference her by name in my speech as I talk about the project she’s working on to make a point. I do this over and over, that it has become part of my ‘modus operandi’. It is not expected of me and it is not common in my field, as most speakers treat themselves as big-time celebrities and often making ridiculous demands of their clients. I have heard of speakers who demand M&M’s in their ‘green room’ and only want the yellow or green ones separated.
I choose to be different. I choose to go the extra mile for my clients and as result they recommend me to others.
